Becker – 1st Sgt. Horace Edwards, USA, Retired, 79, passed away on Tuesday, March 3, 2015, at NMMC, Tupelo. Born on March 17, 1935, in Tupelo, he was a son of the late Frank Lorenzo and Clara James Hunt Edwards.
Joining the US Army at 17, he honorably served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars as a combat engineer, retiring in 1975, after 23 ½ years of dedicated service. After returning home from Germany, he married Alice Virginia Ware on February 24, 1956. He graduated from ICC with a degree in Law Enforcement. After 19 years of service, Mr. Edwards retired in 1994, as an investigator for the MS Public Service Commission. Guided by his faith, he was a member of Center Hill Baptist Church. Loving God, Country, and family, he was passionate about Veterans’ Day. Mr. Edwards enjoyed spending time and grilling out with his family, Gospel music, and fishing.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Alice V. Edwards, Becker; sons, Tim Edwards (Soon), Locust Grove, GA, and Terry Edwards (Pat), Hamilton; sisters, Voline Brown, Corinth; grandchildren, Jesse Elbert, Jason Edwards, Scott Edwards, Erin Welch, and Erica Edwards; great-grandchildren, Austin Edwards, Mayson Blevins, Brittany Edwards, Conner Edwards, Emma Reese Edwards, Seth Welch, Aedyn Elbert, and Berkley Edwards; special friend, Sgt. Major Rabbit Kennedy, USA, Retired.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 13 siblings.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11 AM, Friday, March 6 at Center Hill Baptist Church, Hamilton with Rev. Terry Edwards and Rev. John Maxey officiating. Burial will be in Masonic Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jason, Scott, and Austin Edwards; Mayson Blevins; Jason Welch; and Eric Elbert.
Visitation will be from 5 - 8 PM, Thursday at the E. E. Pickle Funeral Home, Amory and from 10 AM until the service hour on Friday at the church.
