Smithville – Hilton Carl "Hilt" Stegall, 82, died on Tuesday, December 7, 2010, after a sudden illness at NMMC, Tupelo. Born on March 12, 1928, in Itawamba County, he was a son of the late Henry Lee and Pebble McFadden Stegall.
Mr. Stegall attended New Salem school. After having worked at Hatley Sportswear and Dura Crates, Mr. Stegall opened and operated Stegall Backhoe Service for 30 years. He was a dedicated member of Smithville Baptist Church. A wonderful father and grandfather, his family was most important to him. He enjoyed farming and tending to his cows, spending time at the lake and his cabin, listening to Gospel music and watching Unity Broadcasting.
He is survived by his daughters, Patty Stegall, Smithville and Janice (Johnny) Gentry, Tupelo; step-daughters, Leigh (Allen) Duncan, Smithville and Kim (Dee) Bowling, Tupelo; sister, Kathryn Foy, Acworth, GA; brother, Dillard Stegall, Locksburg, AR; granddaughter and caregiver, Amy Franks of Smithville; grandchild, Whitney (Travis) Waters, Colorado Springs, CO; Great-grandchildren, Megan and Derreck Franks, both of Smithville; step-grandchildren, Emily,Katie, and Matt, all of Smithville, and Drew, Eli, and Ryan, all of Tupelo; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by wives, Maxine Stegall and Dorothy Irvin Stegall; sisters, Louise Stegall and Francis King; and brothers, Bob and Dan Stegall.
A Funeral service will be held at 11 AM, Saturday at E. E. Pickle Funeral Home, Smithville with Bro. Wes White and Bro. Grady Davidson officiating. Burial will follow in New Salem Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Derreck Franks, Travis Waters, Bill King, Bob and David Stegall, and Doug Foy. Honorary pallbearers will be Lionel Stegall, Nick Stegall, Ed Suggs, Jason Robbins and Curt Umfress.
Visitation will be from 5 – 8 PM, Friday at the funeral home in Smithville.
