Smithville – Hilda Faye Alverson Summerford, 73, died on Saturday, March 2, 2013, at her residence. Born on December 25, 1939, in Tremont, she was a daughter of the late John Lewis Alverson and Jewel Massengill Alverson Vandiver.

Mrs. Summerford attended Smithville and Tremont schools and was a graduate of Vaughan’s Beauty College. On November 5, 1955, she married Doyle Summerford. Having worked in the local garment industry and at Sunflower Grocery, Mrs. Summerford owned and operated Hilda’s Beauty Shop. A woman of God who was very unselfish and willing to make sacrifices for her family, she was a member of Smithville Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir. Known for her love, feistiness, wit, and humor, her life was guided by Christ and family. Mrs. Summerford enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; her dachshund, Sparky; singing and playing Gospel music; and serving as a pianist for various churches for many years.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Doyle Summerford, Smithville; daughter, Phyllis Prestridge (Gary), Amory; sons, Ronnie Summerford (LaDonna) and Tony Summerford (Mitzi), Smithville; sisters, Gin Tibbett (Jimmy), Starkville, Brenda Irvin (Bobby), Hamilton, AL, Cathey Spann (Leslie), Smithville; and Janice Chew, Tupelo; brothers, James Alverson (Wanda), Biloxi and Mike Vandiver (Judy), Amory; grandchildren, Dee Bowling (Kim), Tupelo, Nicci Howell (Tristan), Carthage, Jordan Summerford (Laura), Smithville, Russ Bowling (Valerie), Guntown, Steven Summerford (Shelley), Smithville, Leah Ivey (Matthew), Smithville, Todd Summerford (Corey), Smithvillle, and Wade Summerford, Smithville; great-grandchildren, Drew, Eli, and Ryan Brown; Abby Roye; Cameron and Hayes Howell; and Isabelle, Grant, and Will Summerford; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her step-father, Pete Vandiver, and sister, Robbie Lewis White.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2 PM, Tuesday, March 5 at E. E. Pickle Funeral Home with Bro. Wes White and Bro. Sammy Washburn officiating. Burial will follow in Young Memorial Garden. Pallbearers will be Dee and Russ Bowling; Jordan, Steven, Todd, and Wade Summerford; Tristan Howell; and Matthew Ivey.

Visitation will be from 5 – 8 PM, Monday at the funeral home.
