Aberdeen – Hermon Hansel Hill, 89, died on Sunday, July 3, 2011, at Gilmore Memorial Regional Medical Center in Amory. Born on December 29, 1921, in the Athens Community of Monroe County, he was a son of the late Arthur Guy and Annie Mae Hilliard Hill.
Mr. Hill was a graduate of Becker High School, Class of 1941. Leaving Mississippi State College (Mississippi State University) during his freshmen year for the US Army, he honorably served his country as a Sergeant in the 10th Weather Squadron during World War II. Returning to school, Mr. Hill graduated with a degree in Agricultural Engineering from MSU in 1948. On November 14, 1948, he married Ann Potts. Spending most of his professional career in various towns in Arkansas, he was an engineer with the Soil Conservation Service for 33 years, retiring in 1980, from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. While in Arkansas, Mr. Hill was extremely active in the Lions Club of DeWitt, Arkansas, where he enjoyed the fellowship of the club, was a Mason, and a member of the American Legion Post. Moving back to Monroe County in 1981, Mr. Hill worked part-time at the Monroe County Airport. An active member of Greenbrier United Methodist Church, he served as a Sunday school teacher. A History buff that enjoyed reading, Mr. Hill was very knowledgeable and would have been an excellent teacher in this subject. He enjoyed listening to Big Band music, enjoyed working, spending time with his pets, and working in his garden.
He is survived by his daughters, Belinda Russell (Gary), New Albany and Karen Williams (John), Andover, KA; son, Charles Hill, Pearl; grandchildren, Jason Pannell (Katie) and Jamie Baker (Matt), Tupelo; Drew and Peyton Hill, Chapel Hill, NC; Thomas Williams, Lawrence, KA; and Jonathan Williams, IV, Houston, TX; great-grandchildren, Lauren and Sarah Baker and John and Elizabeth Pannell, all of Tupelo. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ann Potts Hill, on November 15, 2007.
A Celebration of Life Service with Military Honors will be held at 1 PM, Wednesday, June 6 at E. E. Pickle Funeral Home with Rev. Tom Sheffield officiating. Burial will be in Masonic Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Drew Hill, Jimmy Ashley, Clinton “Bo” Hill, Jason Pannell, Matt Baker, and Mark Ashley.
Visitation will be from 10:30 AM until 12:45 PM, Wednesday, June 6 at the funeral home.
