Amory – Helen S. West, 84, died on Saturday, February 1, 2014, at Gilmore Memorial RMC. Born on August 10, 1929, in Humboldt, TN, she was the daughter of the late Luther Samuel & Ina Louise Hinson Summers.
Mrs. West was a graduate of Newbern, TN, High School. After working for Shumpert Truck Lines, Mrs. West worked as the Amory Middle School secretary for 28 years. Guided by her faith, she was a member of Harmony Baptist Church. Feisty and living life to the fullest, Mrs. West was a free-spirited, people person who was always happy. Always on the go and going somewhere, she enjoyed traveling, shopping, working at the Friendship House, going to yard sales and flea markets, playing Bridge, reading, sewing, going to music jamborees, and listening to Country and Bluegrass music. Mrs. West was passionate about her family and friends; was a supporter of First Friends; and was a member of Kappa Kappa Iota.
Survivors include her daughter, Donna Ling, Amory; grandson, James Alvon “Al” Ling (Kimberly), Oxford; great- grandson, James Richard Ling, Oxford; nieces and nephew, Elissa Middleton (Dean), Amory, Lou Anne Turner (David), Newbern, TN, and Tim West (Jennifer), Senatobia; and special caregivers, Jasmine and Linda Stallings. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Alvon West, Jr., son-in-law, Billy W. Ling, and sister, Tommie Hart.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1 PM, Monday, February 3 at E. E. Pickle Funeral Home with Bro. Don Taggart officiating. Burial will be in Harmony Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be Sonny Loden, Perry Newton, Matt and Steve Butler, Bobby Carter, and Paul Hicks.
Visitation will be from 11 AM – 12:45 PM, Monday at the funeral home.
