Helen Martin Helen Worthy Martin departed this life and entered the gates of Heaven on October 22, 2011 after a brief illness. She was born on July 11, 1925 in Northview , MO to S.M. and Hazel Atkinson Worthy.
She graduated with honors in 1943 from Amory High School and attended Pensacola Junior College. She was married for 59 years to Robert Martin, the love of her life. Mrs. Martin retired from Escambia High School, Pensacola, FL where she served as secretary to the assistant principals. She loved her work and performed her duties with precision and compassion touching the lives of many students during her years at the high school.
She was dedicated to her church, Myrtle Grove Baptist, where she taught sixteen year olds in Sunday school for many years. Later, she taught Senior adults. She was an avid Bible scholar. In recent years she moved to Amory and became a member of First Baptist Church. Her Sunday school class held a special place in her heart and she felt a loving bond with her fellow class members.
Mrs. Martin loved to watch old movies, to read and sew when her eyesight allowed and she was a marvelous cook. Her greatest joys came from being with her family and her many friends.
She is survived by her daughter, Susan Martin formerly of Amory, MS and now of Mt. Dora, FL and her sister, Peggy Worthy Plunkett of Amory. Also surviving her are her niece Wandy Worthy and family of Winona, MS, nephew, John Worthy of Ponte Verde, FL, her sisters-in-law, Addie Ellis Martin of Ft. Walton Beach, FL, Jane Foreman Martin of Opp, AL, and nephews Paul (Cathy) Dorsey of Garland, TX, Joe (Lillian) Martin of Montgomery, AL and Rob (Sophie) Martin of Alabaster, AL, and nieces Polly (Mike) Dubose of Memphis, TN, Jan (Dana) Fusco of Ft. Walton Beach, FL and Liz (Troy) Reid of McKenzie, AL as well as many dear friends.
Mrs. Martin was preceded in death by her dear husband, Robert; her parents, S.M. and Hazel Worthy; and her brother, John M. Worthy
A Celebration of Life service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, October 25, 2011 at the E.E. Pickle Funeral Home Chapel in Amory with Dr. Allen Simpson and Rev. Jimmy McFatter officiating. Visitation will be 5 until 8 p.m. Monday evening at the funeral home in Amory. A graveside service will be 4 p.m. Wednesday, October 26, 2011 at the Peaceful Acres Memorial Gardens in Opp, AL with Dr. Paul Dorsey and Dr. Ron Lentini officiating.
Pallbearers will be Jack Francis, Jack Cantrell, Stan Vernon, Larry Johnson, Jackie Palmer, Dr. Bill Rogers, and Gregg Moore. Honorary pallbearers will be Mary Lib Francis’ Sunday school class.
