Wren – Helen Mayfield Lamar, 95, died on Wednesday, September 22, 2010 at her home. Born on November 19, 1914, in Union County, MS, she was the daughter of the late Dr. James I. and Julia Oda Swain Mayfield.
Growing up in Blue Mountain, MS, she received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Blue Mountain College. After college, Mrs. Lamar taught school in Walnut and Charleston. In 1941, she married Thomas Ruley Lamar, became a homemaker and taught school for 24 years in Grenada. A member of First Baptist Church, Grenada, Mrs. Lamar taught Sunday school and served as a member of the Ladies Ministry Team. After her retirement, she was an active community volunteer. After 63 years residence in Grenada, she moved to Wren to be near her daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Dave Ray. Mrs. Lamar attended Wren Presbyterian Church and was a member of the Wren Library Club.
She is survived by her daughter, Judy Lamar (Dave) Ray, Wren; granddaughter, Libby Ray (Bill) Shea, Olive Branch; two great-grandsons, Will and Andrew Shea, Olive Branch; two step-daughters, Barbara Lamar (Charlton) Buford, Prattville, AL, and Nancy Jean Lamar Flux, Midwest City, OK; 5 step-grandchildren; two nieces, a nephew, cousins and a host of friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Thomas Ruley Lamar and a brother, Dr. L. Henning Mayfield.
A Funeral service for Helen Lamar will be held at 2 PM, Saturday, September 25 at Garner-Harper Funeral Home in Grenada with Rev. Jim Ray officiating. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Charles Harville, Leon Fisk, Andy Carter, Archie England, Buddy Pender and Paul Buford. Honorary pallbearers will be Eddie Merriman and Bill Crowder.
Visitation will be from 5 – 7 PM, Friday at E. E. Pickle Funeral Home, Amory and from Noon until the service hour on Saturday at Garner-Harper Funeral Home.
