Amory-Colonel Harry Jackson Stuart, 84, died peacefully Sun. July 28 at the Greenhouses in Tupelo. Born July 22, 1929 in Monroe County, he was a son of the late Harry E. and Jewell Jackson Stuart. He married Bonna Wallace on February 7, 1954.

Harry graduated high school in Springfield, MO and received a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Mississippi. He honorably served his country in the US Army and retired from the Mississippi Army National Guard after serving 23 years on the Adjutant General’s Staff, as Deputy Chief of Staff Operations and Training. Among his many military service accomplishments are the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal and the Mississippi Magnolia Medal. He completed his Airborne training at Fort Benning Georgia to become a member of the Special Forces. Harry was the Director of Operations for the MS National Guard during the recovery efforts during Hurricane Camille and vital in restructuring the MS National Guard. He was a teacher at Shannon, Amory, and Hatley, where he was named Star Teacher in 1989. More than anything, Harry loved his family dearly. He was an avid reader, book collector and coin collector; he loved to hunt and the outdoors. He was a member of Meadowood Baptist Church and the American Legion.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Bonna Wallace Stuart and sons, Jeb E. Stuart of Bay St. Louis, Andrew W. Stuart (Connie)of Saltillo; daughter, Tina Wade ( BJ )of Memphis; sister, Sue Delle Young ( Colonel Charles D.) of Harrisonburg Virginia; brother, Colonel Ted Stuart of Hattiesburg; six grandchildren, Drew Stuart (Katie)of Tupelo, Joshua Stuart of Oxford, Blake Stuart of Gulfport, Anna Katherine Stuart of Jackson, Gracie Wade of Memphis, and Stuart Wade of Memphis; one great grandchild, John Andrew Stuart of Tupelo, very special friends Buddy and Mavis Chism of Amory, and a host of beloved nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a sister in law, Virginia Stuart.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2 PM, Wednesday, July 31, 2013 at E.E. Pickle Funeral Home in Amory, with Dr. Lloyd Sweat, Dr. Jimmy Stewart, and Drew Stuart officiating. Burial with full Military Honors will follow in Harmony Cemetery. Pallbearers will be his grandsons and cousins, Bill Jackson, Ron Jackson and Jeff Jackson.

Visitation will be on Tuesday evening at the funeral home from 5 PM- 8PM.
