Huntsville, AL - Guy Marvin Nabors, 89, of passed away Sunday, September 5, 2010, at Floyd E. “Tut” Fann State Veterans Home. Born in New Albany, MS, on November 24, 1920, he was a son of the late Guy E. and Jettie Irene Kelly Nabors.
He was a veteran of World War II where he spent most of the war following General Douglas McArthur through the South Pacific. Mr. Nabors was involved in the following foreign stations during WW II: Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, Rockhampton, Australia, Goodenough Island Landing, New Guinea Landing, Baik Island Landing, Leyte Philippines Landing, Luzon Philippines Landing, Mindanao Philippines Landing, Mendelea Philippines Landing then shipped from Leyte Gulf to the USA and discharged at Camp Shelby, Mississippi on December 7, 1945. His military awards included the Bronze Star, Army Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with 3 campaign stars, World War II Victory Medal, Philippines Liberation Medal with two campaign stars, and the Philippines Presidential Unit Citation ribbon. He was also awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge and the Marksman medal with two clasps. Mr. Nabors served as Past Commander of the VFW Post in Amory, Mississippi.
Prior to WW II, Mr. Nabors worked for the Frisco Railroad. After the war, he again was employed by the Frisco Railroad. In 1964, he took a promotion and was transferred to Springfield, Missouri, the home office of the Frisco. He retired in 1980 subsequent to the merger of the Frisco with the Burlington Northern Railroad Company. During his career with the Frisco, Mr. Nabors lived in Amory, MS, Springfield, MO, Birmingham, AL, and Memphis, TN. After retirement, he served as the Vice President of the Frisco/BNSF Railroad Club in Memphis.
Mr. Nabors is survived by his wife of 62 years, Gena Turner Nabors, Huntsville, AL; two children, Guy Dennis Nabors (Ruth), Montgomery, AL, Jan Nabors Ellis (Jimmy), Huntsville, AL; six grandchildren, Edward Robert Barrow (Paula), Middleburg, FL, Scott Michael Barrow (Laura Beth), Kekaha, Hawaii, Caroline Nabors Rosen (Brent), Tuscaloosa, AL, Guy Dennis Nabors, Jr., Tuscaloosa, AL, Ross Spratling Nabors, Tuscaloosa, AL, and Krysten Ellis Pelstring (Jeremy), Norfolk, VA; three great-grandchildren, Hannah, Hunter and Boothe; and his sister, Mildred Nabors Keeton, Birmingham, AL. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Rebecca N. Howard.
A Committal service with military honors will be at 10 AM, Friday, September 10 at Masonic Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Edward Robert Barrow, Jr., AD1 Scott Michael Barrow, USN, Guy Dennis Nabors, Jr., Ross Spratling Nabors, Brent Louis Rosen, Donny W. Harrison, and Mark A. Harrison. Honorary pallbearers will be retired railroad employees.
Visitation will be from 5 – 7 PM, Thursday at the funeral home. Everyone is asked to meet at the funeral home at 9:40 AM, Friday to go in procession to the cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations are made to Mr. Nabors favorite charity, St Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or to a charity of their choice. Memories and condolences may be shared and viewed at eepicklefuneralhome.com.
