Grace Stanford Spruiel

Detroit, AL - Ms. Grace Spruiel age, 96 of Detroit, AL, passed away Thursday, February 8, 2018 at The Meadows in Fulton, MS. Funeral service will be held Monday, February 12, 2018 at 11:00 am from Otts Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Friendship North Cemetery. Bro. Van Dale Hudson will officiate. Visitation will be Sunday evening at the funeral home from 6-8pm.

Grace was born January 12, 1922, in Dora, AL to Lou and Millie Stanford. This little red haired girl lit up their lives.

She attended schools in Detroit, AL and Amory, MS. In 1940 she married Luther Spruiel, the love of her life. They spent the first year of marriage in Cullman, AL. Grace decorated their new home with handmade green gingham curtains and cushions for their nail keg chairs. Luther worked at the sawmill and Grace cooked for other saw millers for .75 cents a day.

After a year they returned to the family farm in Detroit to help care for Luther's mother. They grew cotton and corn and raised chickens, cattle and hogs. They also reared three daughters.

Grace was an avid reader and instilled the love of reading in her children by reading to them on long winter nights. She was a wonderful homemaker and cook and never seemed to mind when Luther or the girls brought home extras for a meal.

She was a member of Friendship North Baptist Church. She loved God, family and home. Her children and those who knew her were truly blessed.
