Amory – Gordon “Red” Thompson, 90, passed away on Tuesday, August 9, 2016, at River Place Nursing Home, Amory, MS. Born on December 22, 1925, in Greenwood Springs, MS, he was the son of the late Thurman and Mary Sides Thompson.
Gordon attended school in Greenwood Springs. At a young age, he honorably served in the US Army in the Infantry Division as well as the Transport Division as a Truck Driver. Gordon served during both World War II and the Korean War. He was a decorated dedicated soldier who received the Silver Star, Bronze Star, and the Purple Heart. He was very proud of his country and his military service. He married Mildred Jackson and together they were blessed with three children. After leaving the military, he worked in the brick masonry industry. He was a great father and provider for his family.
A very active man, Gordon loved to be outside on the tractor. He enjoyed being independent and being outside especially cutting grass and working in the cemetery. Gordon liked to listen to Old Gospel music and ride on his Gator outdoors. His family meant the world to him and he was passionate about donating to St. Jude and the children they served. He leaves a legacy behind and memories for his loved ones to cherish forever.
Survivors include his daughter, Candy Archer (Kenneth), Wren, MS; sons, David Thompson, Aberdeen, Donald Thompson (Mary), Hamilton, MS grandchildren, Brittany Pace (Chris(, Amory, Brandon Archer (Brigitte), Northport, AL, Bridget Whitford (Robert), Mayfield, KY, Tim Thompson (Dana), Amory, Butch Thompson (Robin), Auburn, Al;
great-grandchildren, Chandler Williamson, KY, McKenzie Carter, KY, Rami Kate Pace, Kye Dozier, Walker, Mia, Anna, Olivia, Madelyn, Braylon, and Wren; nieces and nephews, Carrol, Jim, Billy Thompson, Ricky Gillentine, Roger Gillentine, Barbra McGhee, Pam Springer, Brenda Evans and Martha Kyle.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Mildred; brothers, Kermit, Kern, Quint, and Carter Thompson; sisters, Inez, Beatrice, and Josephine Thompson.
A Graveside Funeral Service with Military Honors will be held at 11 AM, Thursday, August 11, 2016, at Coontail Cemetery, Wren, MS with Bro. Robert Earl Fowlkes and Bro. Dennis Smithey officiating.
