Gary Basom

Smithville— Gary Eugene Basom, 55, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 23, 2018, at Mississippi Care Center in Corinth. Born in Havre, Montana, on January 13, 1963, he was the son of Richard William and Nancy Prestage Basom.

Gary attended Amory schools. A proud American, he served in the National Guard and the Army, as well as a brief stint in the Marines. Although he worked as an assistant manager at the Bait Shop in Smithville, he spent much of his career in the military service. He was very passionate about the military and the history of the United States. He enjoyed talking about artillery with anyone that would listen, especially his close friend, Ronnie Sloan. Gary was a member of Bouguefala Baptist Church in Mooreville, and he also attended Gregory Chapel in Becker.

Gary was a passionate reader and enjoyed reading topics such history, military, and the Bible. He was also a talented artist and loved to draw pictures to imitate life. In his free time, he enjoyed listening to 80s Classic Rock and Southern Gospel. He also loved Westerns. Gary also adored German shepherds and even donated one to be trained as a service dog for a disabled man. A humble, generous man, he has left a lasting impact on those who knew and loved him.

Gary is survived by his sister, Margo Morgan; aunt, Martha Prestage; niece, Mary Beth Morgan; and grand-nephews, John Paydin and Kyser Trace Morgan.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his close friend, Ron Armstrong.


Visitation will be held from 5-8 on Thursday, May 24, 2018, at E.E. Pickle Funeral Home.

There will be no formal services at this time.
