Franklin Hathcote

Amory – Frank Hathcote, 92, passed away on Friday, August 14, 2020, at his residence in Amory. Born on May 9, 1928, in Amory, MS, he was a son of the late Elijah Calloway and Mary Elizabeth Hathcote.

Frank grew up in a large family and learned early the value of hard work and helping support his family. At age 4, he helped plant a Walnut Tree in his parent’s yard. At age 7, he helped his father install a roof on a residence. He graduated from Amory High School in 1946 and because he was so gifted with his hands, he began working full time in carpentry. He worked at Walker’s Manufacturing in addition to general carpentry work alongside his father with his contracting business. Retiring at age 62, he continued to work in his shop, with his hands, making wonderful grandfather clocks. He took the Walnut Tree he planted at age 4 and made it into some grandfather clocks, ornate inlaid bowls, and other memorabilia for his family. He also made some clocks from another family Walnut tree from Alabama. A fit outdoor man, at age 80, he cut down a huge solid oak tree at his house and used the wood for various projects.

He married the love of his life, Flora Mae Powell, on May 24, 1952, and they were happily married for over 68 years. Blessed by God, they had two daughters and many grandchildren. Frank was patient and compassionate man who was always selfless in his deeds. He was a member of the Methodist church and lived his faith out through his work and everyday walk. He had a big heart, saw the best in everyone and was always kind to strangers. He liked to joke and cutup with friends and family. Almost every day of his retired life, he enjoyed fishing at the Tenn Tom Waterway, going to family get togethers, working in his yard, growing flowers, and watching the birds in his feeders. He liked all kinds of music especially classic country like Johnny Cash and Ray Stevens. It always made him smile when he would play the music real loud and get lost in the tune. He and his brother, James, built a houseboat, affectionately named “After Hours” and a pontoon boat. They spent many afternoons at PicWick Lake enjoying fishing.

A man who knew the gift each day was, he would often say he wanted another day with his loved ones. They appreciate how much he loved them and all the great memories made with him through the years. They know one day they will be reunited with him and they look forward til that day. His family and friends will miss him dearly.

Left behind to treasure his memories are his wife, Flora Mae, Amory; daughters, Joan H. Robertson (Travis), Kopperl, TX, Sandi Hathcote Vaughan, Tupelo; grandchildren, Jon Robertson (Donna), Chris Robertson, Scott Robertson (Yuki), Sammy Ray Vaughan, Mary Angelyn “Angel” Vaughan; great grandchildren, Garrett Robertson, Chase Robertson, Carley Robertson, Elijah Robertson; nieces and nephews, Judi Horne, Donna Stall, Ken Harden, and Louis Hathcote, Bill Sartain, Ed Sartain, Jimmy Burdine and Wayne Hathcote.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sister, Margie Calloway Harden, Beatrice Hathcote, Beulah Burdine, Irma Sartain, Ruth Hodges; brothers, Elmer Hathcote and James Hathcote.
