Eva Mae Hatcher

Wren — Eva Mae Strawhorn Hatcher, 81, passed away on Monday, September 2, 2019 at NMMC—Gilmore in Amory. She was born on January 9, 1938 to Lena Mae Gray Strawhorn and Houston Harold Strawhorn, Sr., in Okolona, MS.

She grew up in a family with four siblings and her parents were sharecroppers. Their family moved many times during her youth years and she went to work at an early age. She first worked in a garment factory in Okolona and it was in that same town that she met her future husband, Johnny. She was at a community social when she fell down and her knight in shining armor helped her get up. She married that knight, Johnny Hatcher, and they lived a long happy life together. He became a preacher and together they were blessed by God with three children. In addition to being a homemaker, she also drove a school bus for Amory Schools, was a beautician and worked at Amory Garment where she was a seamstress for many years.

Faith in God and her family meant the most to her. Since her husband was a preacher, she was a member of several churches over the years including Unity Baptist Church, Amory, Victory Baptist Church, Guntown and Grace Chapel Church, in Wren. She loved to have family and friends around to eat and fellowship. Her children said she was quick to take all the credit for all of her husband’s fine cooking. Her sons, grandkids, and great grandkids gave her so much joy as well as her women’s groups at church. She liked to listen to Inspirational and gospel music and paint with oils different outdoor scenery and flowers. She created many works of art for her family. In her free time, she loved to hunt yard sales, flea markets, farm and work in the flower garden. Her sense of humor was contagious yet she feared the Lord and served him fervently.

Her legacy of love and laughter will live on in the hearts and minds of her family. They are at peace knowing she is with the Lord and reunited with her beloved husband. The memories they made over all these years will be cherished.

Eva is survived by her sons, Jerry Hatcher (Linda), Quincy, Jamie Hatcher, Wren; grandchildren, Justin Hatcher (Kayla), Lesley Fleming (Casey), Josh Hatcher, Brandon Hatcher (Leighland) , Kortney Harper (Chuck); and great-grandchildren, Tristan and Tanner Hatcher, Anna Carson Fleming, Jayden and Faith Hatcher; Wyatt Harper, Kaiden Harper; Halie and Elizabeth Hatcher.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Hatcher; son, Steve Hatcher; brother, Harold Strawhorn, Jr.; two sisters, Sue Adams and Doris Coggins.
