Amory- Elon Gray Braxton, 83, died on Saturday, August 18, at her residence. She was a daughter of the late Carl and Lillie May Oliver Gray. She was married to the late Travis Braxton.
Mrs. Braxton was born in Bruce, MS and grew up in Calhoun and Tallahatchie County. A very generous and caring lady, she was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need, working as a caregiver to the elderly for many years. She willingly gave of herself, being proud of her ten children she raised. In her earlier years, Mrs. Braxton attended First Assembly of God in Amory, and cherished time spent with her family, and especially her grandchildren. She enjoyed listening to gospel and bluegrass music, watching birds, and tending to her flower garden, especially her prized roses.
Survivors include her daughters, Shirley (Jewel) Oswalt, Sharlet Torre, both of Amory, and Samantha Rittenhouse (Richard), Hatley; sons, Wayne Braxton, WY, Johnny Braxton (Lucille), Amory, Carl Braxton (Laura), OH, Henry Braxton (Rhonda), OH, and Anthony Braxton, Amory; sisters, Sue Steele, WI, Carry Hall (Jerry), CA, Geneva Carson (Charles), FL; a brother, J.E. Gray (Betty), LA; 24 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild, and a host of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband she is preceded in death by two daughters, Mary Gaia and Martha Grimmett.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 12 pm, Wednesday, August 22 at E.E. Pickle Funeral Home, in Amory, with Bro. Waylon J. Powell officiating. A graveside service will follow on Thursday, in New Cleveland Cemetery, at 2pm, in Cleveland, Ms. Everyone is asked to meet at the cemetery at 1:50 pm. Pallbearers will be her grandsons.
Visitation will be on Wednesday from 10-11:45 am prior to the service.
