Fulton, MS – Elnathan “Buster” Perkins, 88, passed away on Wednesday, September 18, 2024 at home after an extended illness. He was born on April 7, 1936, in Itawamba County, to the late Dred Sykes and Naomi Truelove Perkins.
He attended school at New Salem and later joined the army. After serving 4 years in the Army, Buster changed military branches and continued his military career in the Air Force where he served faithfully through both the Korean War and the Vietnam War. After retiring from the military, Buster came back to his family farm. He farmed for many years before completely retiring with his wife Jeanette.
Buster loved hunting and fishing. His favorite pastime was taking the boat out and fishing with his lifelong friend John McNeece. An avid woodworker, Buster enjoyed making furniture and swings for his family and friends to enjoy. He loved to teach his sons and grandchildren the skill of woodworking as well as tool and die and welding skills. He had a deep love for nature and spent much time in the woods of his family farm. He instilled in his sons that love of nature and taught them how to respect and protect it.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife Jeanette Perkins; his son, Roland Perkins; brothers, Bonnie O’Neal Perkins, Leroy Sykes Perkins, Leon “Pete” Perkins, Meridith Lee “Buck” Perkins; sisters, Madie Berniece Gray, Mary Avonelle Hodushault, Sue Kate Thompson, Gloria Faye “Sis” Flye and Geneva Kathleen Franklin; bonus-mother, Callie Weaver Perkins.
Buster will be missed dearly by all that knew and loved him. He leaves behind a legacy of great memories that will be cherished for generations.
Left behind to treasure his memories are his sons, Tony Perkins (Elsa), Rowlett, TX, Gordon Perkins (Becca), Dallas, TX, Paul Perkins (Lorie), Mooreville, MS , and James Perkins (Hannah), Olive Branch, MS; grandchildren, Chris Perkins (Allie), Scarlet Perkins, Hannah Perkins, Levi Perkins, Josiah Perkins, Joshua Perkins, Caleb Perkins, Annabelle Perkins, and Abigail Perkins; his sister Janie Coker, Smithville, many nieces and nephews as well as his loyal dog Max “Houdini” Perkins .
Buster was blessed with amazing caregivers throughout his extended illness. The family would like to thank each of them for the time and love that they have given while taking care of Buster. Your dedication to his care allowed him to enjoy his life in his home. We will forever be grateful!
A Funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 21, 2024 at 1:00 pm at E.E. Pickle Funeral Home, Amory, MS, with Bro. Zack Carter officiating. Burial will follow in New Salem-Tildon Cemetery, Fulton, MS. Visitation for family and friends will be from 11:00 am until the service hour at the funeral home in Amory.
