Amory— Edward Lamar Coker, 78, passed away on Saturday, January 13, 2018, at Diversicare in Amory. Born on March 20, 1939, he was a son of W.L. Coker and Margaret C. Larkin.
Edward graduated from Amory High School with the Class of 1957. After graduating, he attended Itawamba Junior College. Edward served in the Army National Guard. He met his greatest love, Rose, at Sunflower Grocery in Amory. A licensed real estate agent, she stopped by to ask Edward about property, and they ended up getting married in August of 1980. Throughout his life, he was dedicated to working in his various family restaurants, from the sandwich shop at Sunflower, the Frisco Inn, and the Park Hotel. Edward was also a devoted member of Meadowood Baptist Church, where he loved attending his Senior Adult Sunday School class. Edward’s wife and family brought him joy and happiness in life. He loved being with Rose as a couple and enjoyed cooking for his family. His favorite dishes were seafood. He enjoyed catering for the Ducks Unlimited banquets.
Edward was a quiet and caring man with a hardy laugh. In his free time, he enjoyed hunting and fishing, as well as listening to Country music. He was a member of Jaycees, Lions Club, and the Wild Turkey Federation. Edward will be missed by all who knew and loved him. He leaves behind many memories to be cherished by his family, and his family takes comfort in knowing that they will meet again.
Edward is survived by his wife, Rose Coker, Amory; sons, Steven Edward Coker (Geneva) and Kenneth L. Coker (Tonya) of Aberdeen; David Coker, Amory; step-daughter, Brenda Middaugh (Richard), Ormond Beach, FL; step-sons, David Palmer (Karla), Amory; Michael Palmer, Amory; grandchildren, Corey Gill, Josh Coker, Drew Coker, Brittany Coker Murphy, Kenneth Coker; Elizabeth, Maggie, Katie, Kasey Coker; Shannon Coker, Nathan Mitchell, Matthew Palmer, Jason Palmer, Marc Palmer, Samuel Palmer, Aaron Palmer; sisters, Mary Frances Pierce, Aberdeen; Margaret Hendrik (Joe), Nettleton; brother, Rex Coker (Gloria), Amory; 8 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Along with his parents, Edward was preceded in death by his step-father, Paul Larkin, and brother-in-law, Thomas Pierce.
His funeral service will be held at 2 PM, Thursday, January 18 at Meadowood Baptist Church, Amory, with Dr. Lloyd Sweatt officiating. Pallbearers will be Edward’s grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be the Senior Adult Sunday School Class from Meadowood. Burial will follow in Masonic Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4-7 PM, Wednesday at E.E. Pickle Funeral Home, Amory. He will lie-in-state from 1-1:50 PM, Thursday, at the church.
