Carolina – Earnest A. Cummings, 82, died on Thursday, February 17, 2011, at Sanctuary Hospice. Born on October 20, 1928, in Tremont, he was a son of the late James Roy and Ila Viola Palmer Cummings.
Mr. Cummings graduated from Tremont High School and was drafted while in college. He honorably served his country in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Cummings owned and operated Cummings Grocery in the Evergreen Community before retiring. A faithful member of Carolina Missionary Baptist Church, he was active in Brotherhood. For several years, he served on the Board of Cason Water Department. A wonderful man and his wife’s best friend, his faith and family were important to him. Mr. Cummings enjoyed listening to Gospel music, working diligently in his garden, watching basketball, and eating out with friends on Friday nights.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Joyce Cummings, Carolina Community; daughters, Debbie (Bill) Wilkes, Memphis, Vicki (Joel) Smith, Carolina Community and Teresa (Mike) Winters, Nettleton; son, Gary (Melanie) Cummings, Memphis; sisters, Mabel (Brent) Coleman, Aberdeen and Mavis (Billy) Riggs, Nettleton; brother, James Cummings, Birmingham, AL; grandchildren, Jenna and Sara Guasco, Scott and Jeb Smith, Bryson Winters, Garrett Cummings, Justin Winters, Brennen and Peyton Cummings; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Madie and Leather Pierce; and a sister-in-law, Earline Cummings.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 3:30 PM, Sunday at E. E. Pickle Funeral Home, Amory with Bro. Joey Goodwin and Bro. Bobby Wilbanks officiating. Burial will be in New Chapel Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Scott and Jeb Smith, Bryson Winters, Garrett Cummings, Justin Winters and Brennen Cummings. Honorary pallbearer will be Peyton Cummings.
Visitation will be from 5 – 8 PM, Saturday at the funeral home.
