E. C. Carpenter

Amory – Ephram Carroll Carpenter, 66, went home to be with The Lord on October 29, 2014, at NMMC, Tupelo after an extended illness. “Mr. E.C.” as everyone knew him, was born September 9, 1948, in Tupelo to Relder G. and Annie Elizabeth Knight Carpenter of Smithville. After graduating from Smithville High School in 1966, he attended Itawamba Junior College, and he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture Economics from Mississippi State University in 1970.

On January 25, 1969, E. C. married Sandra Petty. After teaching for one year in Kilmichael, MS, he returned to Amory to become the Youth Court Counselor for Monroe County until his retirement in 2004. E. C. also was employed part-time at Amory Fire and Rescue Department as an EMT/Paramedic and taught MASEP (Mississippi Alcohol Safety Education Program) and Hunter Education courses. He, along with Bob Taylor, established The Haughton House, a boys’ group home for troubled youth in 1980. E. C. was very involved in his community, participating in numerous organizations, including The Kiwanis Club, Boy Scouts, youth sports, The Amory Railroad Festival, Entertainment for Education committee and served as president of both the Athletic and Band Booster Clubs while his children were in school.

He was a member of Smithville Baptist Church. Before becoming disabled, he was an avid hunter and fisherman. E. C. enjoyed Mississippi State sports, especially football and baseball, listening to Country/Gospel music, and socializing with “the coffee group” at the local McDonald’s. He also loved spending time with his family and friends, especially his three grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life Service will be at 11:00 AM, Saturday, November 1 at Smithville Baptist Church with Elder Bobby Howell and Bro. Dennis Smithey officiating. A Graveside Service will follow in Hatley Cemetery. E.E. Pickle Funeral Home in Amory will be in charge of the arrangements.

Pallbearers will be Donald Wayne Young, Jerry Jones, Jimmy Bost, Dale Petty, Dewayne Laney, Roger Wilson, Richard Milstead, David Moffett, Bill Miley and Luke Harris. Honorary pall bearers will be Mike Ausbon, Bobby Cox, Pete Randle, and Bob Taylor.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 PM, Friday at E.E. Pickle Funeral Home, Amory and from 9:30 AM until the service hour, Saturday the church.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Sandra Petty Carpenter, Amory; his sons, Eric Carpenter (Rachel) of Collierville, TN, and Matt Carpenter (Leah) of Tupelo; his daughter Emily Carpenter Alford (Jeremy) of Cleveland, MS; three grandchildren, Elijah Cade Carpenter, Zane Thomas Carpenter, and Curry Scott Carpenter; two brothers, Samuel Rickey Carpenter (Becky) and Edsel Ray Carpenter (Judy) of Smithville; brother-in-law, Dale Petty (Judy), Tupelo; and three nieces Tracy Hester (Randall) and Laura Summerford (Jordan), of Smithville and Kimberly Cooper (Tim), Spring Hill, TN.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandparents, Elbert Ephram and Sallie Lou Green Knight and Andrew Jackson and Dora Carroll Carpenter.
