Amory – Dr. Charles Bert Hill, 83, died on Friday, August 27, 2010, at Gilmore Memorial Regional Medical Center. Born on April 11, 1927, in Amory, he was a son of the late Kennedy Vern and Bessie Chesley Hester Hill.
After graduating from Amory High School in 1945, Dr. Hill served in the US Naval Medical Corps, stationed in Camp Lejeune, NC, until his honorable discharge in December 1946. He played football for Hinds Junior College. In 1953, he graduated from Auburn University with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. At Auburn, he was president of the Auburn student chapter of American Veterinary Medical Association and a member of the Alpha Psi professional fraternity.
In Amory, he was an active life-member of Amory First United Methodist Church, active with Boy Scouts of America, a member of Kiwanis Club, and founder and first president of Amory Swim Association. In 1984, he founded one of the first pet therapy programs, serving patients of the Amory Nursing Home.
Dr. Hill was a member of the Mississippi Board of Veterinary Medicine for 20 years, serving as president several times. He was president of the American Association of National Veterinary Medicine Licensing Board, member of the National Veterinary Medical Examination Committee, member of AVMA Commission for foreign graduates in the US, and was voted Mississippi Veterinarian of the Year in 1990.
As an Auburn Alum, he served on the Advisory Board for the School of Veterinary Medicine from 1968 to 1988 and on the Auburn National Alumni Association Board for three terms. He was a life-member of the Samford Society of Auburn University.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Kennedy V. Hill, Jr., and Dr. Chesley Hester Hill.
Dr. Hill is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Edna Durden Hill, Amory; daughter, Susan (Mike) Vann and son, Bert (Judy) Hill, Jr., of Birmingham; grandchildren, Michelle (Will) LaMar, Trey (Jamie) Hill, III, Dr. Stewart Hill, Billy Murphree, and Libby (Matt) McGowan; great-grandchildren, Charles IV and Thomas Hill.
A funeral service for Dr. Bert Hill will be held at 11 AM, Monday at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Warren Coile officiating. Burial will follow in Masonic Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Trey Hill, III, Dr. Stewart Hill, Billy Murphree, and Matt McGowan. Honorary pallbearers will be James Burrow, Jerry Lantrip, Dr. Robert Cole, Dr. Richard Hollis, Hobdy Bryan, Dick Millender, Dr. Dan Moore, Dr. Bill Rogers, Dr. Joe Raper, John Earl Whitaker, Chuck Kennedy, Jerry Guess and Hal Rogers.
Visitation will be from 5 – 8 PM, Sunday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to First United Methodist Church, Amory, MS 38821-0147 or a charity of choice.
