Aberdeen – Douglas Edward Mitchem, 54, died unexpectedly on Sunday, May 29, 2011, at his residence. Born on October 22, 1956, in Pettry Bottom, West Virginia, he was a son of the late Samuel Alfred and Laffon Brown Mitchem.
Doug attended Blue Jay Elementary, Little Beaver Junior High, and Central High School in West Virginia and Hamilton High School. He was of the Baptist faith. Doug worked as a plumber with John Bethune and had worked for Coca-Cola Bottling Company and had done road construction. A man with a big heart who would help anyone in need, he was passionate about supporting and donating stuffed animals to St. Jude Children’s Hospital. With family being most important to him, he cherished the time spent with his grandchildren, especially Rylee Grace. Doug enjoyed listening to Oldies Country music, auctions, watching Westerns and American Pickers, riding with his nephew, Joe, and collecting M&M items.
He is survived by his wife and best friends, Lisa Myatt Mitchem, Aberdeen; daughter, Seleana Griffith, Lubbock,TX; step-daughter, Kristen Plunkett, Aberdeen; sons, Bobby Wayne Butler, Hamilton and Bradley Easter, Aberdeen; sisters, Edith McQuillia, Commerce, GA, Barbara Lewis, Bluefield, VA, Wilma Redden, Mary Gorbutt, Deborah Davis, and Kathy Krausa, all of Aberdeen, and Sara Mitchem, West Virginia; brothers, Dale Mitchem, Aberdeen, David Mitchem, Nettleton, and Woody Mitchem, Hatley; grandchildren, Byron Jackson Butler, Bryson Edward Butler, Bryant Forrest Butler, Rylee Grace Welch and Braelyn Griffith; step-grandchildren, Joseph Douglas Griffith, Malachi Free and Ashton Free; several nieces and nephews; and a great-great-niece, Lydiah Jimenez. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Danny Joe Mitchem, Fairlena Faye Mitchem, and James Alfred Mitchem.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 AM, Thursday, June 2 at E. E. Pickle Funeral Home with Bro. Robert E. Fowlkes officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Aberdeen. Pallbearers will be Josh Welch, Chris Mitchem, Tim Chaney, Lucas Jimenez, Mike DuVauld, Donny Stacy, Bobby Butler, Doug Davis and Danny Morris, Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be Jimmy Morris, Kenny Sanders, and Walter Krausa.
Visitation will be from 5 – 8 PM, Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be given to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
