Gurnee, IL – Dorothy G. Cleveland, 80, passed away on Thursday, March 10, 2016, at Oak Hill Supportive Living Community. Born on May 22, 1935, in Booneville, MS, she was a daughter of the late Zero and Kiturah Cole Barrett.
Dorothy attended school in Nettleton, MS. On December 27, 1952, she married Leroy Cleveland and moved north, settling in Winthrop Harbor, IL where they raised their three children. Dorothy was a wonderful nurturing woman who believed the secret to happiness was making others happy. After retiring from Cherry Electric Company, she moved back to Nettleton. She was a Christian and a member of Jones Chapel Baptist Church where she sang in the choir and volunteered in the kitchen. Her Christian faith guided her daily. Dorothy’s family and her sweet furry friend, Maggie Mae, meant so much to her. Later in life, she moved to Gurnee, Illinois, to live with her daughter. She worshipped and attended Gurnee Community Church. Dorothy enjoyed cooking, quilting, Gospel singing, and reminiscing old times with family and friends. She made beautiful one-of-a-kind quilts that will be cherished forever by her family. In her free time, she enjoyed listening to Gospel and Country Western Music. Her sweet spirit came out especially when she was around little children. She will be missed by all that knew her and loved her.
She is survived by her daughters, Gwen Shaw (John), Gurnee, IL, Jennifer Jewell (Bill), Ft. Wayne, IN; son, Phil Cleveland (Rody), Kenosha, WI; grandchildren, Andrea Fallos, Nathan Cleveland, Erica Ziccarelli, John Shaw III, Scott Shaw, Lory McDaniel, Amber Mynhier, Gabe Jewell, and Bethany Jewell; great-grandchildren, Cheyenne, Darren, and Kelsey Cleveland; Jake and Brett Bardi; Alex, Eva, and Veda Ziccarelli; Adeline Mynhier; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Leroy Cleveland, and her eight siblings.
Her Funeral Service will be held at 11 AM, Saturday, March 19, 2016, at Jones Chapel Baptist Church, Nettleton, with Bro. Wes Stephens officiating. Burial will follow in Jones Chapel Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Andrea Fallos, Nathan Cleveland, Erica Ziccarelli, John Shaw III, Scott Shaw, Lory McDaniel, Amber Mynhier, and Bethany Jewell.
Visitation will be on Saturday, from 9-11 am, March 19, 2016 at the church.
