Amory— Dorothy “Dot” Brown Cauthern, 93, passed away on Friday, December 21, 2018 at NMMC in Tupelo. She was born on November 10, 1925, in Detroit, Alabama to Marvin Elsie and ArtieV Ballard Brown.

Dot graduated with the Smithville Class of 1943. At age 17, she started teaching during World War II, due to the shortage of teachers. She attended Mississippi State, where she obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education. She also obtained her Master’s Degree in Library Science from the University of Mississippi in 1960.

A woman with a huge heart, Dot was a patient soul who loved children dearly. She taught the children of Monroe County for 35 years and touched so many lives during her lifetime. She taught at the Phillip School, Van Buren, Trace Road School, Smithville, and Becker. She also worked for five years with the Freewill Baptist Children Homes as a house parent, where she was in charge of the care of 12 little boys for five years of their lives.

In her free time, Dot liked to travel. During her lifetime, she had traveled the lower 48 states as well as Mexico and Canada. Dot liked to spend time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren who affectionately called her “Grannie”. She will be missed by all that knew and loved her.

She is survived by her daughter, Margarita Cauthern Thompson (Roy); grandchildren, Sean Patrick Thompson (Jodie), Anna Kathleen Thompson Rost (Shane); great-grandchildren, Morgan Rost (Toby Yarbrough), Molly Rost, Laura Thompson, and Reagan Thompson; great-great-grandchild, Rylee Kate Yarbrough.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Gera Works, Ruby Maxine Brasfield, Jesmer Stevens Cody, and Milton Brown.
In lieu of services, the family asks that you take this time of year and make many memories with your family, just as we have made over the many years with Ms. Dot.
