Amory – Donald H. Coker, 78, died on Friday, November 18, 2011, at Oak Tree Plantation. Born on November 10, 1933, in Smithville, he was a son of the late Howard Cornelius and Irene Spann Coker.
Mr. Coker attended Smithville Schools and honorably served his country in the US Air Force. While living in Zion, IL, he worked as a Fuller Brush salesman, on the line for American Motors, as a press operator for Johnson Motors, and as an owner-operator of a used car dealership in Zion, IL. Returning to Smithville in 1977, he owned and operated Coker’s Han-D-Mart. A man of faith, Mr. Coker was a member of Meadowood Baptist Church. A hard-worker, provider and one who loved unconditionally, he enjoyed spending time with his family and working at his business. Known for his smiles, laughing, and joke-telling, his life revolved around his children and grandchildren. Mr. Coker enjoyed listening to Gospel music.
He is survived by his wife, Jean Coker, Gardendale, AL; daughters, Dawn M. Coker, Fulton, Branna Coker Kimbrough (Daniel), Fulton, and Patti Flippo (Daniel), Gardendale, AL; son, Byron J. Coker (Sheila), Smithville; sisters, Opal Moffett, Smithville and Joy Walden, Wren; brother, Lewis Coker, Fulton; grandchildren, Jason Coker, Kyle Jolly, Brandon Easter, Courtney Sharkey, Samantha Flippo, Chase Coker, Zack Flippo, Ashli Coker, Katelyn Coker, Bradon Kimbrough, and Abby Kathryn Kimbrough; great-grandchildren, Jaylen Coker, Haylei Coker, Lea Coker, Jaedin Sharkey, Taylor Coker, Leila Jolly, and Aubree Easter; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Harriett Lou Seigel Coker.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10 AM, Monday, November 21 at Meadowood Baptist Church with Dr. Lloyd Sweatt and Bro. Lewis Coker officiating. A Graveside Service will follow in Young Memorial Garden with Bro. Kevin Crook officiating. Pallbearers will be Darwin Hathcock, Gregg Kennedy, Coy Dabbs, Van Dabbs, Rex Coker, and Chris Coker.
Mr. Coker will lie-in-state from 9 AM until the service hour on Monday at the church.
Visitation will be from 5 – 8 PM, Sunday at E. E. Pickle Funeral Home.
