Charlie Pearl Mize

Quincy – Charlie Pearl Hayes Mize, 84, died on Thursday, September 11, 2014, at Darlington Oaks, Verona. Born on February 24, 1930, in Columbus, she was a daughter of the late Clyde Hayes, Sr., and Rachel Dickens Hayes.

Mrs. Mize graduated from Lee High in Columbus and from IJC Nursing Program. On August 14, 1949, she married James Thomas “J. T.” Mize. Retiring in 1995, she was a LPN, working in Pediatrics at Gilmore Memorial RMC. Mrs. Mize was a member of Athens Baptist Church and a former Sunday school teacher. Her life was guide by her love of God, her family, her nursing career, and her favorite quote, “A mistake is not a mistake if you learned something from it; then, it’s a lesson learned.” She enjoyed taking care of babies, children, crocheting, knitting, reading and Gospel music. Generous, loving, strong, caring and wise, she would reach out to anyone or anything that needed help.

Survivors include her daughters, Elaine Welch (Marvin), Aberdeen, Lois Ann Cooke (Austin), Columbus, Judy Carol Owens, Alabama, and Brenda Kay Smith (Jimbo), Columbus; sons, James Clyde Mize, Aberdeen and Charles Thomas Mize (Nancy), Corinth; sisters, Martha Ann Sledge, Columbus, Joyce Allen, Summit, MS and Sarah Richardson, Columbus; brother, Leon Hayes, Clinton; grandchildren, Rachel Campbell; James Raymond Mize; Brianna Prestage; Emily Mize; Jamie Sanders; Charlie Mize; Ann Lee Baker; Shane, Chris and Josh Eads; Amy Jimenez; Marsh and Amber Cooke; Tina Ragan; special great-granddaughter, Samantha Pearl Prestage and at least 21 more great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and special friend, Mary Lou Bandy.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Elizabeth Maxey and brothers, Johnny, Clyde, Jr., and Bud.

A Funeral Service will be held at 1:30 PM, Sunday, September 14 at E. E. Pickle Funeral Home with Bro. Billy Wayne Whatley and Bro. Scott Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Quincy Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Neal Roberts, Wayne Childress, Bobby Prestage, Wiley Morgan, Charlie Mize, and Leslie Turman. Honorary pallbearers will be Rachel Campbell and James Raymond Mize.

Visitation will be from 5 – 8 PM, Saturday at the funeral home.
