Carolyn J. Smith, 74, passed away on May 26, 2020, at her residence in Amory, Mississippi. Born on July 9, 1945, in Fall River, Massachusets, she was a daughter of the late Herbert Albion Case and Anna Borden Case.
Carolyn grew up in Rhode Island and graduated from the Josephine F. Wilbur High School in Little Compton, Rhode Island. She furthered her education and obtained a Registered Nurse Certificate from the Newport Rhode Island School of Nursing. Carolyn was passionate about caring for patients and she worked primarily at the Memorial Hospital in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. One of her close friends at work was Sandra Sarazin and she retired after twenty years of service. She was blessed by God with a daughter, and a loving husband, Arthur Smith. Carolyn was proud of her daughter and her grandkids and was close to her sister, Marsha and brother, Herbert.
She was a Christian, who drew a lot closer to God in her later years due to trials she faced. Carolyn was attending New Hope Baptist Church with one of her close friends, Dale Esteb. Her guiding philosophy was to appreciate the little things in life, be true to yourself and treat others the way you would want to be treated. With Carolyn, what you saw was what you got and she was always happy to help others in need. She lived many places during her lifetime, Puerto Rico, Virginia Beach, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and California. The beach was one of her favorite places, being a peaceful retreat where she could find shells and enjoy her favorite food, like lobsters, shrimp or scallops.
Later in life, in her free time, she loved to be outdoors working in her flower gardens, watching birds and hummingbirds, and just being around all things green. An avid cat lover, she always took care of stray cats and collected cat figurines. She like easy listening music such as Barry Manilow, Neil Diamond, or Johnny Mathis. A woman with a green thumb, she was a member of the Flower Lover Garden Club for several years. She was able to raise beautiful orchids and African violets inside her home. Hunting for the perfect antique with her husband or her friend, Kathie, was a favorite past time of hers as well. A creative woman, she loved to do creative projects including making things with seashells or making objects out of paper mache.
She will be missed dearly by her friends, family and especially her daughter.
Carolyn is survived by her daughter, Jennifer Murphy (Patrick), Conway, South Carolina; grandchildren, Jacob A. Furland, South Carolina, Andrew J. Furland, South Carolina; sister, Marsha Miner, Rhode Island, Herbert “Junior” Case, Jr. (Eleanor), Rhode Island; several nieces and nephews; friends, Dale Esteb, Kathie Fallin, and Sandra Sarazin.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Smith, and her grandson, Jonathan Furland.
There will be a memorial service at some point in the future in her home state of Rhode Island.
