Betty Ashton, a loving matriarch and cherished member of her community, passed away peacefully at her residence on January 8, 2025, at the age of 85. Born on August 15, 1939, in Sulligent, Alabama to the late Cartie and Lucille McCarley. Betty's life was a tapestry woven with kindness, strength, and an unwavering dedication to those around her.
In her early years, Betty embarked on her career in the garment industry, a testament to her industrious spirit. She later co-owned an appliance store that became a staple in her community before embracing her calling as a Christian counselor. Betty was a beacon of hope and guidance for many, serving not only as a counselor but also as a devoted Sunday School teacher. Her nurturing personality touched countless lives, and her ability to uplift others was matched only by her incredible talents as a seamstress.
Betty was a woman who radiated warmth and positivity. With her ever-present smile, she embodied the belief that a kind word or deed could make a difference in someone's day. She often reminded those around her of her favorite saying: "You've got to pull yourself up by the boot straps and carry on!" This spirited encouragement became a guiding light for friends and family, illustrating her resilience and unwavering support.
She was a proud graduate of Sulligent High School and throughout her life, she cultivated a variety of passions. Betty found joy in gardening, sewing, reading, and most importantly, visiting with her beloved family and friends. Each moment spent with loved ones was a treasure, and her home was a sanctuary of warmth and laughter that welcomed all.
Betty leaves behind a legacy of love, cherished memories, and a close-knit family. She is survived by her daughter, Susan Reeves (Steve); her grandson, Kyle Reeves (Melissa); her granddaughter, Krystal Sutton; her sister, Jane Lindzy, and her stepson, Steve Ashton (Kaye). The hearts of 13 great-grandchildren will continue to carry her spirit, along with a host of nieces and nephews who will remember her fondly.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Author Ashton; her son, Johnny Wooodham; her granddaughter, Leslie Potts; her brother, Harry McCarley, her stepson, Todd Ashton, and her parents, Cartie and Lucille McCarley. Each of them held a special place in her heart, and their memories will forever be part of her story.
As we reflect on Betty’s remarkable life, we honor her enduring legacy of kindness, resilience, and faith. She was a woman who believed in the goodness of life and in the power of love. Betty Ashton will be deeply missed but lovingly remembered by all whose lives she touched. May her spirit continue to inspire others to "pull themselves up by the boot straps and carry on."
