Barbara Jean Mitchell

Amory – Barbara Jean Sargent Mitchell, 80, passed away from this earth at North Mississippi Medical Center – Gilmore and started her new life in heaven on Wednesday, June 26, 2024. She was born on January 12, 1944, in Nettleton, MS to the late Rubel and Edith Nash Sargent.

Jean grew up in Monroe County in a family with three other siblings and she attended Amory High School. She married the love of her life, Donald Ray “Honeybee” Mitchell on July 4, 1963, and they were married for over 53 years and were blessed with two children and two grandchildren. Jean was an amazing wife, mother, and grandmother who didn’t mind serving others, whether through work or charity. In her younger years, she worked in the Garment factory and then she became a Cosmetologist. So gifted, she made many women feel beautiful about themselves. During the last part of her career, she owned and operated South Amory Florist, where she made many beautiful floral arrangements. She helped many Valentines Days and Weddings be perfect for loved ones with her talented touch.

A longtime member of Bigbee Baptist Church, Jean loved the Lord and cherished her strong relationship with God. She was strong woman, thanks to her faith, and her deep love for her family was amazing. Her love was so strong that in addition to her own children and grandsons, her nieces and nephews called her “Mama Jean”. She loved to host family gatherings, painting and arranging flowers. Jean was a strong supporter of St. Jude and children being her passion, she even hosted foreign exchange students at her home for over two years. She loved to listen to Gospel and Country music and most of all just listen to her family reminiscing and making sweet memories together.

There is no doubt that a sweet reunion took place with her family members who have gone on before her. The wonderful meals, beautiful artwork, and gorgeous floral arrangements were just some of things she made that her family will miss. Most of all, they will miss her sweet loving spirit and presence. Jean will be forever in their hearts.

Left behind to cherish the memories are her daughter, Kimberly Mitchell, Amory; grandchildren, Andrew Kitchens and Xander Kitchen, Amory, MS; special friend and caretaker, Joe Canyon; a host of extended family and nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband and best friend, Donald Ray Mitchell; son, Douglas Ray Mitchell; brothers, Henry B. Sargent and Tommy Sargent; sister, Ruth Basham.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, June 29, 2024, at 11:00 am at E. E. Pickle Funeral Home in Amory, MS with Bro. Allen Basham officiating. Burial will follow in Haughton Memorial Park with pallbearers being Anthony Minor, Greg Basham, Mike Basham, Randy Sargent, Tyler Gosa, and Kendall Gosa.
