Amory – Arthur Stephen Ashton, 79, passed away on Thursday, July 9, 2015, at his residence. Born on December 21, 1935, in Sheldon, Vermont, he was a son of the late Robert and Dorothy Hemmingway Ashton.
Steve was a 1953 graduate of Bellows Free Academy in St. Albans, VT, and graduated from the University of Vermont in 1962. He honorably served in the US Army from 1954 – 1956. From 1962 – 1991, Steve worked in financial services for Weyerhaeuser Company in Vermont, Pennsylvania, Mississippi, and Alabama. On April 15, 1988, he married Betty Sue McCarley. Guided by his faith in God, he was a member of Meadowood Baptist Church and enjoyed studying his Bible. Passionate about the Food Pantry, he frequently volunteered to work serving others. Steve enjoyed being with his family, helping others, piddling, playing golf, and Gospel music.
Survivors include his wife of 27 years, Betty Sue McCarley Ashton, Amory; daughter, Susan Reeves (Steve), Amory; sons, Stephen Arthur Ashton, Columbus, and Johnny Woodham, Aberdeen; sister, Margaret Montcolm (Joe), St. Albans, VT; brother, Robert E. Ashton (Pauline), St. Albans, VT; 8 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Tod Michael Ashton.
A Funeral Service will be held at 2 PM, Saturday, July 11, 2015, at E. E. Pickle Funeral Home, Amory, with Dr. Lloyd Sweatt officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Sulligent. Pallbearers will be his grandsons.
Visitation will be from 12 – 1:45 PM, Saturday at the funeral home.
