Hatley – Arice Marvin Basham, 83, died on Friday, October 22, 2010, at his residence. Born on June 13, 1927, in Hamilton, he was a son of the late Robert Winston and Zaddie Lorene Nix Basham.
Mr. Basham honorably served his country in the US Army during World War II in the Philippines. A jack-of-all-trades, he worked as a welder and a heavy equipment operator before owning and operating grocery stores in Becker and Amory. Outspoken, Mr. Basham’s priority was his family, especially spoiling his grandchildren. He always had a peice of candy and a hand shake for the little ones. He enjoyed gardening and listening to Country Bluegrass. Mr. Basham was a former deacon at First Assembly of God and had earned his priesthood with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. A devoted husband, he had lived in Kenosha, WI, Smithville and Becker before moving to Hatley. Attending Becker schools, Mr. Basham was proud of receiving his GED at age 61.
He is survived by a daughter, Marcell (Wayne) Senter, Iuka; sons, Jimmie (Linda) Basham, Waynesboro, TN, Tommie (Penny) Basham, New Hampshire, Dewayne (Cynthia) Basham, Hatley, and Randall (Margie) Basham, Philippines; sisters, Ann McCauley, Madison, Fay Conners, Aberdeen, Joyce King, Amory, Linda Hall, Tupelo, Ala Ree Smith, Wren, and Sara Simmons, Vicksburg; 18 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by infant sons, Bobby Joe and Billy Ray Basham; daughter, Gloria Kay Jones; brothers, Horace, Arlin Lee and Charles Hubert Basham; brothers-in-law, Curtis Smith, Dub McCauley and Jimmy Hall; great-granddaughter, Sidney Robertson; and granddaughters, Brandie Maschell Basham and Vivian Basham.
